The Saucon Creek is a 17 mile long tributary of the Lehigh River. The name was originally SAKUNK, the Native American name meaning “where a stream empties into a larger stream.”

This mostly spring-fed cold-water creek flows right past HSA and through the entire Hellertown area. Trout fishing is excellent along the Saucon Creek, and many HSA members start their fishing right on club grounds. Bait fishermen and those who prefer artificials are usually rewarded with an enjoyable experience which may include catching some of the Saucon’s native brown trout. HSA hosts an annual fishing contest for persons under 13 years. Many large trout are stocked by HSA for this fishing contest.

Several easily accessible parking areas are close to the stream. Parking is available at the HSA lot for members. Other areas are at Walnut Street and Water Street, north (downstream) of the HSA club grounds.

Large overhanging trees which offer protection on hot summer days are plentiful along the Saucon Creek. An old grist mill is a short distance downstream from the Sportsmen’s Club grounds. Two ponds at the Gristmill also offer another fishing opportunity.

In the 70’s the Saucon Creek was in extremely poor condition due to a local mining operation which caused a grey silt coating on the stream bed. In the early 80’s the mining ceased and for a short time the Saucon Creek was virtually dried up. One could walk across many areas without getting wet. Fortunately, time healed the damage as the water table recovered and HSA volunteers built many stream deflectors which increased the oxygen content of the water. Today the Saucon Creek ranks as an excellent trout stream. The PA Fish and Boat Commission has on several occasions conducted stream shocking to study the fish population and distribution. The results have been applied to stream management to ensure that the Saucon Creek will be a viable fishery for years to come.

For the non fisherman, there is an extensive walking and bike path which passes several athletic fields located beside the stream. This path is very popular for individual and family outings. Geese, ducks, and an occasional deer may be seen in this very picturesque area.

Trap shooting is offered on Tuesday mornings 9:00 AM to 12 noon and Thursday evenings 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Trap range will close earlier than the times posted if all shooters have completed their shooting.

At Hellertown Sportsmen’s Association, we have an electric automatic trap that we put to use on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have also added a Voice Calling System that everyone is thrilled with! Our Trap Field is nestled in the south end of a limestone quarry and presents a real challenge to shooters. It has a somewhat abrupt background. Our field is also equipped with 300 watts of metal halide light which enables us to shoot right up to 9:00 PM even on the short days in the fall and winter. Many shooters find trap shooting to be great fun and very challenging. We have shooters ranging from the beginner up to expert. We stress safety and safe gun handling at all times to preserve everyone’s fun. Instruction is available for the novice shooter and there are always experienced shooters around to give helpful tips. We do shoot doubles from time to time which is a lot of fun.

All safe shotguns are allowed with 12 gauge being the most popular. You should use target loads and only loads of up to 1 1/8 oz. of # 7 ½ or # 8 shot are allowed. Shooters have used 16 and 20 gauge. That adds a little more challenge to the game. Many use their field guns for practice in preparation for the game season. Come on out, join a great group of people for a fun morning or evening!

An added benefit for our beginners as well as seasoned trap shooters is our nearby pistol range which is often used to check the pattern and sighting in.

All guns must have their actions “OPEN” until they are at their actual shooting position.

Decision Making Under the Threat of Assault

Paul Piscator

Smith & Wesson Training Instructor

NRA Certified Instructor

International Association Counterterrorism & Security Professionals

Decision making is not only the physical act of responding to a threat but most importantly the mental process or judgmental procedure to appropriately respond and not jeopardize taking someone(s) life inappropriately. Responding properly is initiated though experience. Training is another way to reduce human error and to accelerate the acquisition of higher judgmental decision making skills. We must recognize the fact that we now control success or failure in our hands governed by our experience and knowledge. If we err in our decision while under stress an innocent life may be taken. It has happened. Training should include scenarios to reflect good judgment and discretional use of force. Training needs to reflect the way you will need to defend yourself and others in your accompaniment. The fundamental concept is to keep thinking, reassessing, adjusting and reassessing again. Lessons learned will be reflected or transferred in the way you respond. Training scenarios introduce situational evaluation, risk management and decision making, giving the trainee more control over the situation ensuring a successful outcome. We reflect on our past decisions to make current decisions.

Standing in front of a target shooting at the “10 ring” and seeing how accurate you can become is good fundamental practice of the basics. We all do it including myself. Unfortunately when the threat is two arm lengths away you will not have time to study the sight picture. Use of cover, if available, threat identification in dim light, creating distance, communicating to those with you, shooting from difficult positions while protecting others and functioning under stress is what defensive shooting is all about. You will not be thinking about your stance, extending your arms to get a good sight picture in relation to your target while the threat is advancing and practically on top of you. Defensive situations are about critical decision making, responding appropriately and competently without escalating unnecessary force or responding inappropriately.
